## Innovative Breakthroughs in Urology
China’s rapid advancements in urological technology have established it as a global leader in medical innovation. The 18th International Alliance of Urolithiasis Advanced Endourology Training Course, held at Guangzhou Medical University on June 27, attracted nearly 120 doctors from 42 countries.

## Showcasing Cutting-Edge Techniques
One of the event’s highlights was a surgical demonstration by Professor Zeng Guohua, Vice President of the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University. Professor Zeng showcased his groundbreaking Super-mini-PCNL technique, a minimally invasive procedure that significantly improves the removal rate of complex kidney stones. This technique allows patients to be discharged after just one day without the need for drainage tubes, facilitating rapid recovery.
“Professor Zeng’s surgical presentation was impressive, showcasing world-leading technology,” said Professor Kemal Sarica, President of the International Alliance of Urolithiasis.

## A Legacy of Innovation
China’s journey from following global trends to setting them in urological technology spans over 40 years and three generations of medical professionals. In 1984, Dr. Wu Kaijun of the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University performed China’s first percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). Despite significant challenges, including high blood loss due to the large size of the percutaneous channel, Dr. Wu’s efforts laid the foundation for future innovations. He continuously refined the technique, eventually developing the “Chinese-style minimally invasive PCNL.”
Building on this legacy, Professor Zeng and his team invented an innovative suction stone extraction system, further refining the Super-mini-PCNL technique. This advancement has attracted international doctors to China to learn and adopt these cutting-edge procedures.

## An International Learning Hub
Guangzhou Medical University has become synonymous with excellence in urological training for many international doctors. Dr. Mohan from India attended the recent workshop, drawn by both the advanced technology and the comprehensive training programs. Dr. Fandi from a public hospital in Jordan also participated, deeply influenced by the recommendations of his international colleagues and the expertise of Dr. Gu Di, Chief Urologist at the First Affiliated Hospital.
Dr. Fandi’s experience in Guangzhou was transformative. He worked closely with Dr. Gu, participating in hands-on surgical practice and significantly enhancing his skills. “The people here are incredibly kind and skilled, always ready to answer my questions. I never felt pressured while learning,” he remarked. Despite his initial impressions formed through social media, Dr. Fandi discovered many delightful surprises during his year in Guangzhou, from the local cuisine to the warmth of the people.
